How to Get Rid of Moths in Your Bird Cages

An important part of bird cage maintenance is keeping creatures other than your bird out of the cage. Moths are a common pest that come from the birdseed that your bird feeds on. While in storage, moths infiltrate the birdseed and lay their eggs in the food. Eventually, the larvae will emerge and feed on the birdseed. Not only can they be a nuisance to your birds but they will quickly fly out of the cage and into the rest of your home. Fortunately, with the right method, you can prevent moths in your bird cage.

Instructions

    • 1

Place bags of newly purchased bird seed into a freezer. Leave the bag in the freezer for 24 to 36 hours. During this time, the cold temperatures will kill the moth eggs, preventing them from emerging when you place the bird seed into your bird's cage.

Place a birdseed moth trap from your local pet supply store into the cage. When purchasing the trap, look for one that notes it contains the same pheremones released by moths during mating to ensure the trap will indeed attract the live moths.

Check the traps regularly for moth collection. Replace as necessary.
