How to Make Bird Feeders With 2 Liter Bottles

If you have many birds in your yard, then making a bird feeder will be a great gift for your feathered friends. Buying bird feeders is expensive, and the feeders are often not durable enough for harsh weather conditions. Make your own inexpensive bird feeders with 2-liter bottles. If the 2-liter bottle bird feeder breaks, you will not be out of a lot of money. Making bird feeders is a great craft project for kids, but use adult supervision when letting children make these bird feeders.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out the 2-liter bottle. Remove the label and use mild soap and warm water to remove debris and sticky residue.

    • 2

Use a drill to create two 1/16-inch holes. Drill the first hole in the bottom of the 2-liter bottle, close to the center. Drill the second hole through the center of the bottle cap.

    • 3

Place the wire through the 2-liter bottle. Remove the cap from the bottle. Run the wire up through the hole drilled in the bottom of the bottle.

    • 4

Run the wire through the 2-liter cap. Screw the cap back onto the bottle. Secure the wire and the cap by wrapping it around the small neck of the bottle. Leave enough wire at the bottom of the 2-liter bottle (this will be the top of the bird feeder) to hang the bird feeder.

    • 5

Drill two 5/16-inch holes in the bottle. Drill the holes close to the bottle cap end of the bottle. Drill the holes on opposite sides of the bottle in order for the dowel rod to go completely through the bottle. This will create a perch for the birds.

    • 6

Create two additional 5/16-inch holes 2 inches above and 90 degrees from the first holes. Insert the second dowel rod through these holes. The dowel rods should form an "X."

    • 7

Cut holes in the bottle large enough for the seeds. Do not make the holes too large, or all of the seeds will pour out of the bird feeder.

    • 8

Remove the cap and fill the bottle full of fresh birdseed.

    • 9

Find a spot to hang the bird feeder. Use the extra wire hanging from the bottom of the bottle to secure it to a tree branch, fence or clothes hanger.
