How to Keep Bird Seed Dry

Proper birdseed storage will help ensure that your seed will stay dry and free from insect larvae, mold and fungi that can grow easily in a container that isn't airtight. It's important to keep your birdseed storage container somewhere dry and cool, such as a garage. Keeping your seed dry will help make sure the birds who eat it are healthy and getting all the nutrients possible from the seed.

  1. How to Keep Birdseed Dry

    • 1

Pour the bird seed into a large, airtight plastic or metal container. You can use a 20-gallon plastic trashcan for this, just as long as the top snaps on and allows no air to get in or out. If you live in area with lots of squirrels, you may want to use a metal container instead to avoid any chewing through the plastic. The seed will stay dry as long as the top of the container is secure at all times.

Place the container in a place where it is away from the access of wild animals. Don't leave it outside. Somewhere dark, cool and dry---such as a pantry---is favorable.

Take the top of the container off when it is time to use the birdseed, then make sure to replace it and snap the top back into place as soon as you are done.
