How to Make Finch Feeders

Finches are one of the most social and colorful birds in North America. Placing a finch feeder in the backyard invites these colorful birds to safely enter and remain for the family to enjoy. Instructions

    • 1

Wash the soda bottle and set it upside down on a drying rack overnight.

    • 2

Using the permanent marker, carefully draw five spaces around the soda bottle for the dowels to be inserted. Each dowel will go completely through the bottle from one side to the other. For best results, consider using a step method for the dowels so that multiple finches can perch on the feeder at one time.

    • 3

Draw circular windows 1/2 inch above each of the perches for the birds to use for feeding. These should be approximately the size of a silver dollar.

    • 4

Carefully cut out the spaces and windows using the craft knife. Discard the plastic pieces.

    • 5

Cut two small openings that the top of the bottle and insert the kite string. This will be used for hanging the feeder.

    • 6

Insert the dowels into the spaces. If they are not fitting completely snug, press some Play-Doh against the outside of the dowel to create a snug fit. Allow the feeder to sit until the Play-Doh is completely dry.

    • 7

Using a funnel, carefully fill the feeder with birdseed. Finches typically eat thistle or Nyjer seeds, because they are small and easy for the birds to eat. Some specialty shops may offer additional feeds to attract specific types of finches.

Hang the feeder. For the best results, place the feeder where squirrels and other birds are not likely going to try to eat from it. Also, be sure to place it out in the open so that predators cannot sneak up on the birds while they are feeding. Be sure to check the feeder once a month and keep it filled to continuously attract the finches.
