How to Make Bird Cakes With Children

Making bird cakes that act as mini bird feeders can be a summer activity to do with your kids. They require no cooking, so even young children can help. No special equipment is required and they can be simply hung from the branches of trees. They take just a few hours to freeze, so make them in the morning and by the afternoon you and your kids can be watching the birds chow down.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the bread crumbs in a large mixing bowl.

    • 2

Mix in the peanuts, raisins, sugar, corn meal, flour and bird seed. It is easier to stir and also a lot more fun for children if you add one ingredient at a time.

    • 3

Add the peanut butter and bacon drippings. This will get hard to stir and the help of an adult might be needed.

    • 4

Spread out a sheet of wax paper on a cookie sheet. Use your hands to form the mixture into donut shapes. They should be about 4 inches in diameter. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for a few hours.

    • 5

Take the frozen rings out of the freezer. Tie each ring to a piece of strong string and then tie in the trees outside the window and watch what happens.
