Things You'll Need
- Nolvasan, Wavicide, or household bleach
- Plastic bucket or large glass jar
Instructions
Decide which disinfectant you will use. Nolvasan is the most popular choice because it is relatively non-toxic and does not produce harmful fumes. Household chlorine bleach, such as Clorox, is inexpensive but should not be used on syringes that contain rubber parts. Wavicide is the most effective disinfectant commonly used, but it produces harmful fumes and must be used outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area.
Clean the syringes with hot, soapy water immediately after use. Rinse thoroughly, making sure that all visible debris is washed away. Formula residue on the syringe will prevent disinfectants from working properly.
Mix a solution of disinfectant and water in a plastic bucket or large glass jar. Nolvasan: 3 ounces per gallon of water. Chlorine bleach: 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Wavicide: 1 part Wavicide to 4 parts water.
Remove plungers, and if applicable, O-rings from the syringes.
Place the syringes, plungers, and rings in the disinfectant solution. Make sure they are completely submerged in the solution. Nolvasan: Soak for at least 10 minutes. Household bleach: Soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Wavicide: Soak for 30 minutes.
Rinse the syringes very thoroughly under running tap water, until no odor is detectable. Allow to air-dry completely before use.
