Choose the location for the seed bird feeder. Keep in mind that seed will spill and drop out of the feeder. For this reason you probably do not want to hang a feeder in or near a garden. The spilled seeds will create a lot of extra garden weeding work for you. It is easiest to hang the feeder some place where you can mow over anything that grows from the seed that falls to the ground.
Consider running a clothes line or similar type of line between two trees and hanging a bird feeder from the line. It is best to keep seed bird feeders at least six feet away from tree trunks or limbs, fences, and anything else that predators, such as cats, can climb. This will also help to discourage squirrels who are competition for the bird seed.
Attach a line to the top of the seed bird feeder for hanging. Thick fishing line is the best choice. Fishing line is slippery and is difficult for squirrels to climb down to get to the seed.
Tie the fishing line that is attached to the feeder to the clothes line or pole that you will be hanging the bird feeder from.
Fill the bird feeder with seed. Sunflower seed is the favorite of many backyard birds, but using a seed assortment will bring the largest variety of seed eating birds to the feeder.
