How to Make Birdhouse Openings Smaller

Providing a birdhouse with appropriate dimensions is key to attracting and protecting a given species of wild birds. A proper opening size can prevent the entrance of larger, dangerous predators. Birds will demonstrate a distinct preference for a given opening size. Dedicated birdwatchers can decrease the circumference of an opening by adding a simple lining of polymer clay. Using this inexpensive acrylic to adjust the birdhouse entrance provides a simple solution and a pop of color.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the front panel from the birdhouse to adjust the opening size. Wipe the area surrounding the opening with a clean, dry cloth -- to remove any dust or other particles that would impede the polymer's adhesion. Pour a small amount of liquid polymer into a paint tray, and apply it liberally to a paintbrush. Apply a thin coat of liquid polymer clay to the inner circumference of the opening.

Use your hands to mold the polymer clay to the desired shape and size of the new birdhouse opening. Press it firmly into the original opening of the birdhouse, using your fingers and a plastic knife to adjust the appearance according to personal preference.

    • 3

Cover the wood of the birdhouse surrounding the opening with aluminum foil to protect the wood from heat damage. Use a heat gun on a low setting for 15 to 20 minutes to completely dry the polymer clay. Move the gun frequently around the opening to prevent accidental scorching of the clay or wood.

Test the clay with your fingers to ensure it is completely firm and dry, applying more heat as necessary. Remove the foil surrounding the polymer clay. Sand away any uneven spots on the new opening with fine-grain sandpaper.
