Diet
-
The African Gray parrot has very specific dietary needs. An improper diet can result in a bad tempered bird in poor health. Food pellets are generally the basis of a parrot's diet, but fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins may be added. Around three-fourths of the bird's diet should be pelleted food and proteins, while the other quarter should consist of fruits and vegetables. Leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach, may be beneficial, as they can help prevent a calcium deficiency.
New Foods
-
Most fruits and vegetables may be offered to your African gray parrot. The trick is getting the parrot to take new foods. The African gray parrot may have the intellect of a 5-year old human, but it has the temperment of a toddler and will not readily accept new foods. Thus, it's important to introduce new foods to your bird at an early age.
Toxic Foods
-
While your parrot will appreciate most fruits and vegetables, some foods are toxic to parrots. Raw, dried beans contain a toxin that can be fatal to parrots. The pits of fruits -- including apples, cherries, peaches and apricots -- contain cyanide. Avocado, chocolate and rhubarb are also quite toxic and should never be given to African gray parrots.
Treats
-
Good treats for your African gray parrot are also nutritious foods. Sweet potatoes, carrots, squash and cucumbers make good treats. In addition, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard greens and leaf lettuce may be offered. Berries, mango, apples, melons, kiwi and papaya also may be used as treats for your African gray parrot.
