Things You'll Need
- Parrot formula
- Plastic syringes
Instructions
Remove the hatchling from the nest 10 days after it's born. Leave the parrot in the nest with the mother for at least 10 days so that the mother can ensure it's adequately fed and cared for until it's hardier. Parrots that stay with the mother for a few days after birth have a greater chance at survival.
Feed the parrot a parrot hatchling formula designed for the type of parrot you're dealing with. There are several hatchling formulas available for sale and these can be purchased at an exotic pet supply store or through online suppliers.
Mix the formula according to the manufacturer̵7;s directions, making sure that it's thoroughly stirred and heated to the appropriate temperature. If you're going to microwave your formula, never microwave more than five seconds per half cup and test on the skin on your wrist before giving it to the hatchlings.
Administer the formula to the hatchling using a disinfected plastic syringe. Match the bird̵7;s bobbing motion so that the young parrot doesn̵7;t inhale the food. Check the feeding chart on your formula for exactly how much formula to give the young bird. Generally, the bird will eat 10 to 12 percent of his body weight during one feeding.
Clean the syringes after use and dispose of any uneaten food. You should never feed your parrot old, unused food because it's not good for their health.
