How to Feed Parakeets Fresh Fruit

Parakeets require fresh fruits to prevent reproductive, respiratory and digestive diseases. Many budgies are vitamin deficient without having to be because fruits that prevent such diseases are no further than the refrigerator. Feeding a variety of parakeet-safe fruits is an easy daily step in your parakeet's feeding routine. Fruits increase your bird's health and stimulate your parakeet with a variety of flavors, colors and textures that contain essential nutrients.

  • Plastic coffee stirs
  • 1/4 cup fruit cut into 1-inch cubes

      Use your parakeet̵7;s toys to determine favorite colors and textures that can be used to indicate possible food preferences or nutritional needs.

      Select two fruits each week similar in colors to the bird's favorite toys, such as banana for yellow and mango for orange.

      Wash all fruits in cool water and set on a paper towel before serving them to your parakeet.

      Slice a few pieces off each fruit and set them on a paper towel. Do this each morning as you are preparing your parakeet̵7;s food and water dish.

      Tie a knot on one end of the coffee stir to keep the fruit from sliding off what is now the fruit kabob.

      Pierce two or three pieces of the fruit onto the coffee stir.

      Select a place in the cage near a perch and suspend the stir by tying the other end of the stir in a knot around one of the cage bars.

      Offer fruit to forage by placing quarter-sized pieces of fruit on a clean paper towel in the bottom of the cage.

      Stuff a slice of fruit in between bars near a perch each time you are eating an apple or pear to create bonding time with your pet.
