How to Fix a Spring-Loaded Bird Feeder

Spring-loaded bird feeders are designed to allow only birds to gain access to the seed they contain. These very effective feeders have spring-loaded perches that take the weight of small desirable wild birds, but not the weight of larger ̶0;pest̶1; bird species, or of squirrels. The perch̵7;s spring is pre-set to hold a specific weight and will drop down if a heavier creature attempts to sit on it. The action of the perch dropping down closes the feeding ports. Certain brands of spring-loaded feeders make provision for the tension of the spring to be adjusted to allow only certain species of garden birds access.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove your spring-loaded bird feeder from you garden.

    • 2

Hold the feeder over a small plastic container. Tilt and shake it to pour out the seeds.

    • 3

Carefully take the bird feeder apart. The majority of brands are designed to be easily dismantled and the various components come apart without the use of tools.

    • 4

Place the empty feeder in a vertical position on the work surface. Most brands of spring-loaded feeders are similar in design. Push down on the cap and turn slightly. Pull up the center post cap and disconnect the hanger cable. Carefully remove the nut and place it in a safe place on the work surface. Remove the tube or column body of the feeder. Remove the spring-loader perch.

    • 5

Wipe the perch assembly down with a moist cloth. Dirt and grime around the perch mechanism is typically the cause of unit malfunction. Dry the entire assembly with paper towels.

    • 6

Take the opportunity while the feeder is dismantled to clean it thoroughly. Grime and tiny bits of seed can become wedged and prevent the seed ports from closing correctly. Place the tube and post cap in to a 5-gallon plastic bucket with a solution of white vinegar.

    • 7

Rinse the unit under a running tap and thoroughly dry the different parts before assembling it once again.

    • 8

Re-set the spring to adjust the weight the perches can hold by turning the setting knob at the top of the tube on the totally sealed spring unit.

    • 9

Fill the feeder from the top with seed and return it to your garden.
