How to Make a Honey Treat for Birds

According to Holly Nash, DVM, formulated diets, vegetables and small amounts of fruit and treats is the best diet for birds. While formulated diets and vegetables are healthy for birds, naturally sugary treats such as honey and fruit should compromise 5 percent of the diet. Sticky, sweet honey is a treat for tame and wild birds, especially when it is dipped in cracked corn, white millet, thistle and other natural foods.

Instructions

  1. Pine Cone Honey Treats

    • 1
Your hands may get sticky from the honey.

Swirl a honey dipper into a jar of unprocessed honey. Aim the dipper over a large bowl until the honey drips off.

    • 2

Dip large pine cones into the honey until they are coated with it.

    • 3

Fill a sealable plastic bag halfway with white millet and cracked corn.

    • 4

Put the sticky, honey-covered pine cones into the bag. Shake the bag until the pine cones are coated with cracked corn and white millet.

    • 5

Remove the pine cones from the bag. Put them on a tray at room temperature until they are served to birds.

    Honey Sticks

    • 6

Dip wooden chew sticks, which have holes drilled on one end, into the bowl of honey. Cover the wooden chew sticks with a thin layer of honey.

    • 7

Put black-oil sunflower seeds, cracked corn, bird seed and thistle on a sheet of wax paper.

    • 8

Press all sides of the wooden chew stick against the bird feed until it is coated.

    • 9

Put the honey sticks on a tray at room temperature until they are served to birds.
