How to Feed Swans

Swan's are large white birds with orange beaks in the same grouping as geese and ducks. There are seven species of swan in the world, all noted for their size. Adult mutes and whooper swans reach 1.5 meters in length and they have a wingspan of 3 meters. Swans can be a common site in parks and the public can feed them, following some precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed the swan's fresh bread; mould is poisonous to them. Alternatively feed with grains such as corn or barley, and fresh greens, like lettuce or spinach.

    • 2

Throw food into the water. Do't just leave it on land. If swans get used to coming out of the water for food they will come out every time they see a car or person arriving.

    • 3

Never try to hand-feed a swan. They are incredibly strong birds who can possibly break human bones.

    • 4

Don't approach female swans during springtime. This is their breeding season and they are overly protective of their eggs.
