How to Make Chicken Mash

Chicken mash is a type of wet food for chickens that consists of various scraps. There is no particular way to make chicken mash, since it is typically made with whatever leftover bread and vegetable scraps you happen to have on hand. In fact, almost anything can be used in moderation. A finished chicken mash looks very similar to a human stew and can be used in conjunction with store-bought chicken feed to help keep your chickens fed and healthy.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a large steel or iron pot on the stove and fill it about a third of the way with water as a stock. If you've boiled some vegetables in water, use that water as the basic stock. The pot can be any size, but the more scraps you have, the larger the pot will need to be.

    • 2

Throw scraps into the stock. Almost anything can be used, but vegetables and bread, rice and cereal are typical. The softer vegetables will require less cooking time. Ideal vegetables include carrots, cabbage, artichokes, broccoli, corn, lettuce and turnips. Stale bread, cereal, rice mixtures, biscuits and even pasta can go in the pot as well. Protein and calcium are an important part of the diet, so adding a little milk or even ground nuts is a good idea.

Bring the mash to a boil. The goal is to cook everything down to a mush. After bringing to a boil, lower the heat to just under medium and simmer until it begins to combine. Sprinkle a little flour in to thicken the mixture if necessary and continue to simmer.

Remove from heat when everything has begun to get soft and blend together. Stir it well and store it in covered plastic containers to cool.
