How to Feed Barn Swallows

Barn swallows, also known as Hirundo rustica, can be found in the rafters, eaves and chimneys of open structures throughout North America and Europe. They are easily identified by their long forked tails and incredible aerial abilities. Though they typically feed on flying insects, barn swallows will also eat grubs and worms in the winter months when it's more difficult to find flying foods. You can even crush and place eggshells on the feeding platform to help supply them calcium.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a wooden stake securely in the ground near the nest. Dig a hole and pack the stake in with dirt or cement.

    • 2

Attach a small piece of plywood -- approximately 18 inches square -- to the wooden stake using nails. This will be the feeding platform.

    • 3

Poke a few small holes in the jar lid to help drain any rain water. Turn it upside down and nail it to the center of the plywood surface.

    • 4

Place small grubs, mealworms and other small insects into the jar lid. You may also try a variety of millet, buckwheat, cracked corn and canary seed.
