Grains
-
Grains are a primary component of a parrot's diet. Watch their sodium intake by avoiding too many processed grains. Like humans, parrots gain the biggest benefit from eating a variety of whole grains. Quinoa, brown rice and wheat berries are all excellent nutritional choices. Parrots may enjoy the inclusion of whole grain pasta or strips of whole grain tortilla. Avoid feeding the bird potato or corn chips, or other salty, fried junk foods.
Fruits and Vegetables
-
Fresh or cooked fruits and vegetables are an important component of the parrot's diet, and should be offered on a daily basis. Parrots enjoy sampling a wide variety of flavors and preparations. Always wash the vegetables before cutting and avoid processed vegetables that may contain sodium. Vegetables should be offered in conjunction with fruits, as too many fruits can cause diarrhea. Avocados are toxic to parrots, as are nectarines, cherries, peaches and other pitted fruits.
Animal Products
-
Very small amounts of animal products provide protein to parrots, which emulate foraged bugs and larvae consumed in the wild. Parrots are lactose intolerant and should never be fed raw milk or cheese due to the salt content. Cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs and egg shells are suitable sources of calcium and protein. Ensure chicken, tuna and beef are fully cooked before serving. Avoid pork or any processed meats which may contain dangerous levels of sodium or preservatives.
Seeds and Nuts
-
Seeds and nuts are an excellent source of protein and antioxidants when served to parrots in extreme moderation. Seeds and nuts were once mistakenly believed to be a healthy diet for a bird. However, they are too calorie-dense and lack the proper vitamins to provide all the nutrition necessary for a domesticated parrot. If you obtain a parrot which eats a diet primarily comprised of nuts or seeds, consult a veterinarian about transitioning the bird to a healthier diet.

Food for Parrots
Parrots require a balanced, healthy diet much like their human owners. The antioxidants found in fresh fruits and vegetables are critical to their health and maintaining a strong immune system. A healthy parrot should be fed a diet comprised of 50 percent grains, 45 percent fresh fruits and vegetables, less than 5 percent selected animal products and less than 1 percent seeds and nuts. Diet mixes specifically engineered for parrots can provide nutritional variety, but are no substitute for fresh produce.
