What does a California condor eat?

A California condor has a carnivorous diet, specializing in scavenging on large dead animals, such as deer, elk, and cows. They generally only eat fresh carcasses as meat spoils quickly in warm weather. Using their exceptionally keen sense of smell, condors can detect a carcass up to 1.5 miles (2.5 km) away. With a wingspan of up to 9.5 ft (2.9 m), they are able to soar gracefully over long distances to find food. Condors often rely on other scavengers, such as vultures and ravens, to find carcasses, and they will often gather in groups to feed.
