How to Make a Bathing Cup for a Parakeet

Most parakeets love to take a bath and will often step eagerly into a shallow bowl or saucer of water. Unfortunately, the small, slightly larger than cup-size tubs sold in pet stores do not provide sufficient room for the bird to bathe comfortably. Parakeets extend and spread their wings while bathing, so a vessel with ample room must be provided. Also, to ensure your bird's health and safety, its bath should be free of sharp edges and heavy enough so that it will not tip over.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the potting saucer with 1/2 to 3/4 inches of lukewarm or tepid water. It's important that the water not be too hot.

    • 2

Set the saucer on an unfolded linen dish towel, rubber place mat or unprotected surface that you won't mind getting wet. Parakeets splash --- a lot! Be sure that the surface on which you set your bird's bath is level and stable.

Place your parakeet's cage beside the saucer, open cage door and invite your pet to bathe. Entice the bird by laying a lettuce leaf in the saucer or by luring the bird with one of its favorite toys placed inside the bath.
