How to Apply Diatomaceous Earth to Chickens

Chickens get fleas and mites just like dogs and cats do. They are also at risk for sticktight fleas, which can be fatal to chickens. The health of our animals is very important; one severe flea infestation can dramatically affect their well-being. Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a safe, organic product that helps keep pests at bay. Regular use can improve the condition of your chickens and other pets.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase food-grade diatomaceous earth; it can be bought online or at local poultry supply stores.

    • 2

Put on plastic gloves and a face mask. DE comes in fine-powder form, and it can irritate the lining of your nose or your eyes.

    • 3

Sprinkle DE in the dust-bath area you have designated for your chickens. Chickens use dust baths as a means for eliminating pests from their feathers. The DE will be that extra ingredient that will eliminate and kill the pests that are embedded or attached to the flesh or feathers of the chicken.

    • 4

Sprinkle DE directly on to the chicken if you do not have a dust-bathing area. Lightly dust the powder between feathers and pat it into the flesh. Be careful to avoid the eye area.

    • 5

Apply the DE directly to the ground of the chicken coop. Place it along feed bins and water dishes. This will prevent pests from attaching to the chickens in the first place.

    • 6

Add DE to the chicken feed. Always follow label instructions; the amount will vary depending on the number of chickens. DE will eliminate any internal parasites, such as worms, from the chicken's body.
