How to Groom a Canary

The canary originated from the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira. Bred since the 17th Century, canaries have been keeping people company for decades. Canaries have been bred for their colors --- black, red and gold --- for their song, and for their variety of body shapes and sizes. Whatever kind of canary you own, it will need attention to stay healthy and happy. Part of your routine should involve grooming the bird.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a solid, dull-colored towel on the bed or table. A bright-colored or highly contrasted towel might scare your bird. Let your bird walk around on the towel and get used to it. Place the clippers on the towel and let the bird examine them.

    • 2

Gently fold the towel around your bird and pick the bird up.

    • 3

Speak gently and enthusiastically to your bird. Show the bird your clippers and slowly hold its feet as you clip its nails. Be gentle and patient. If your canary is uncomfortable, play with it for a bit before resuming grooming. After a few times, grooming will become a routine your canary will be relaxed about.
