How to Trim the Beaks of Lovebirds

Though the lovebird's beak continuously grows, its size generally stays constant since the bird should wear it down while performing various tasks. Yet there are times when the beak will appear overly large and in need of a physical trim. You should not attempt to trim it at home. Only a veterinarian will have the equipment and skill to trim or grind it appropriately according to the Petalia website. At home, encourage the bird to do self-trimming through natural methods.

Give the lovebird a piece of hard wood to chew and nibble if you notice that the length of its beak is abnormally long and obstructs normal eating or grooming functions. The bird will attempt to chew the wood and rub the surface of it enough to break off the oversized parts of the beak.

    • 2

Place small twigs and branches in the cage. The lovebird will wear out its beak while gripping and chewing on the twigs and branches.

    • 3

Insert pet-safe chew-toys in the cage. The bird's chewing activities will help trim the beak and simultaneously keep it engaged and entertained.

    • 4

Install a cement perch. The lovebird will occasionally brush its beak against the abrasive surface and trim it in the process. Cement perches are specifically created to aid a lovebird's beak according to the Pet Education website.
