Is it illegal to catch baby ducks?

It is illegal in most states and countries to catch or possess wild baby ducks, also known as ducklings. Ducklings and their nests are usually protected by Migratory Bird Treaty Act in United States and similar legislation globally. These laws are designed to protect the species from over-harvesting and to give them a fair chance of survival.

For example, in the US, the law prohibits the "take, possession, and transportation" of any migratory bird, including their nests and eggs, without a permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Similar rules and agencies are in place for other countries.

Violators of such laws can face legal consequences that may include fines or even jail time. Therefore, even if you come across a stray or abandoned duckling, it is best to leave it alone and contact a local wildlife rehabilitation center or the appropriate wildlife authorities for assistance. They are better equipped to properly handle and care for them.
