Why do small birds stay away from the feeder after a hawk has killed one?

Birds use alarm calls as a communication system to alert each other of potential danger. When threatened by a hawk, small birds may sound an alarm call, warning their fellow birds of the predator's presence. In response to this warning, other small birds in the area will likely avoid the feeder, temporarily ceasing their usual feeding behavior until the threat has passed.
