Is there anything a hummingbird eats besides nectar?

In addition to nectar, hummingbirds also eat insects and spiders to obtain protein and other essential nutrients. Insects make up a large part of their diet, especially during the breeding season when they need extra energy to feed their young. Some of the insects they eat include flies, mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, and beetles. Hummingbirds catch insects by darting out and grabbing them in midair, or by hovering and using their long tongues to extract them from flowers or leaves.
