What is the rate of pecking for a woodpecker?
Woodpeckers can peck up to 20 times per second, or 1,200 times per minute. They have a specially adapted skull that can withstand the impact of their pecking without causing damage. The beak of a woodpecker is made of keratin, the same material that makes up human fingernails, and is constantly growing. As the beak wears down from pecking, it is replaced by new growth.
