How to Build Breeding Boxes for Indian Ringneck Parrots

The relatively small size and beautiful markings of the Indian ringneck parrot make this species a popular choice for many bird owners. With proper attention and handling, these birds can quickly become a beloved companion and family member. If you want to breed your ringneck parrots, you will need to build a breeding box. This is an enclosed box where the mated pair will instinctively nest and raise their young. It is important to note that Indian ringneck parrots will only mate with parrots that are the same color unless introduced to different colored parrots at a young age.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a hole in the cardboard or wooden box that is 3 inches in diameter. The box should be enclosed and have a lid so you can easily observe and monitor the offspring.

    • 2

Fill the box with 2 inches of nesting material, such as pine shavings, straw or grass. Nesting material is available at your local pet store. Ensure that the nesting material does not contain any oils or scents as these can harm the parrots.

    • 3

Place the breeding box inside the parrots' cage after they have mated. If you are unsure that the parrots have mated, observe the female for nesting behavior, which includes frequent rearranging of items in the cage.
