How to Build Suspended Aviaries

Aviaries are large cages built to give birds a space to fly. They are much larger than normal bird cages and are generally built out of wire mesh so that bird waste can fall through the bottom. Suspended aviaries attached to a support system that suspends the aviary above the ground. Building a suspended aviary can give your birds the freedom they need to fly while still keeping them safe in cages. Aviaries can be built for zoos, farms or any other area where birds must be contained.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig holes in the ground along the perimeter of where you want your aviary. Create the aviary as large as you want. Include at least four to eight holes for your posts. Make one at each corner of the aviary. Build the aviary around trees to give the birds places to nest.

    • 2

Place one of your posts in the hole and hold it up right while a helper pours the quick dry cement into the hole. Keep holding it steady while the helper then throws dirt back into the hole to hold the posts in place. Repeat this process for each post. Let the cement dry for a day.

    • 3

Measure out the distance between of your posts and cut out 2-inch by 4-inch pieces of wood to stretch between each support beam. Build support beams across the sides and width of your aviary to use as a frame.

    • 4

Cut 8-foot-wide wire mesh sheets that, when combined, are long enough to go around the perimeter of your aviary. Climb your ladders and hold the wire mesh tightly between the pools.

    • 5

Nail them in place with your hammer and nails. Hang them from the top of the pole down. Repeat this process with each pole but leave one end of the frame open.

    • 6

Cut two sheets of wire mesh that are large enough to cover the top and bottom of the aviary. Nail the top wire mesh to the very top of the frame, including the support beams and posts.

    • 7

Cut holes with your saw in the top mesh wide enough for the tree trunks in your aviary. Make sure these holes are wide enough to let the trunk go through but narrow enough so that birds can't escape.

    • 8

Hang rope from the top of your support beams to give your birds something with which they can play and perch. Use your 2-by4 studs to create perches for rest and for food on your support beams.

    • 9

Attach your bottom wire mesh at the bottom of your wall mesh to create a bottom suspended about 7 feet above the ground. Cut holes in the bottom to fit the trunks of the trees of the aviary.

    • 10

Put up your last piece of side wire mesh to complete your aviary walls. Cut a 5-foot square out of the the last wall on three sides using your pliers. Leave the last side attached. This is your door. Tie the door to the rest of the wire mesh using your light wire. Untie it to open the door again.
