How to Build a Hawk Breeding Chamber

A proper breeding chamber is essential to hawk mating and eyas adjustment. It is possible to breed hawks with a minimally sized chamber, but the more room the birds have, the more they can spread their wings and mate as they would in the wild. If you have the space, make a 80-square foot, 8-foot high, outdoor rectangular breeding chamber, which will provide space for the birds, as well as exposure to outside noises to support adjustment.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot for your hawk breeding chamber. Ideally, the enclosure will occupy an area well protected from strong drafts, excessive sunlight and digging critters. The space should be flat with a clean dry dirt surface.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the rectangular breeding chamber. The sides should be 10 feet by 8 feet. Mark the dimensions with the wooden stakes.

    • 3

Build the chain link enclosure, including all four sides and the roof. Hang the gate in a corner that is farthest from where the hawks will be nesting.

    • 4

Install the rock ledge or tree branch, and provide sticks and other building materials for the nest. Hawks like to be able to hide in dark places, so the more of this available, the better.

    • 5
Each hawk should have two perches within the chamber.

Install at least four perches within the enclosure; two for each bird. Place them highly enough that birds must fly to reach them.

    • 6

Spread the pea gravel onto the floor of the breeding chamber. Place the water dish on the floor, away from ledges and perches to avoid droppings in the water.

    • 7

Cover the breeding chamber with the tarp in the event of extremely wet or hot weather to protect the hawks from extremes.
