How to Recognize the Breed of a Rooster

Roosters are male chickens, known for their trait of crowing in the morning when the sun rises. These animals are often found on farms, as well as some small suburban chicken lovers interested in producing their own eggs. Roosters come in various sizes and appearances; they do not always necessarily match the female chickens of their breed. In order to tell which breed of rooster you have, there are different parts of the rooster to consider.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the rooster's coloration. Many breeds of rooster have distinct coloration. Rhode Island Reds are named for their distinct red feathers; the White Leghorn is a solid white breed whose chickens are common egg layers for commercial businesses.

Take note of any unique physical traits; the Black Australorp rooster has a comb with five distinct points on its head.

Weigh the rooster; different breeds of rooster have different weight averages. Jersey Giant roosters weigh up to 13.5 pounds while Araucana roosters weigh up to only 6 pounds.
