How to Tell if a Parakeet Egg Is Infertile

Parakeets, like chickens, will often lay eggs and leave their owners panicking over what to do with a supposedly fertilized egg. However, most of these eggs are actually unfertilized. A quick test will help you find out whether or not an egg will hatch.

Take your cardboard box and place your egg on the box. Be sure to keep the egg upright from how you picked it up. With your marker, draw a circle of the bottom diameter of the egg and place the egg upright on a soft surface.

Cut the hole on your cardboard box with your scissors and place your egg into the hole so that the bottom of the egg is extending through the hole.

    • 3

Shine your flashlight from the bottom of the egg and identify any dark spots in your egg. If your egg is clear and has no shadow, your egg is infertile. If your egg has a shadow - no matter how small - your egg is fertile.
