How to Identify Types of Conures

Conures are a popular breed of parrots that make ideal pets because of their intelligence and playfulness. While there are more than 40 different species of conures worldwide, conures from the Pyrrhura and Aratinga species are generally kept as pets. You can use color, sound and size as the differentiating factors to identify the various types of conures.

Instructions

Examine the color of the conures' feathers. Conures come arrayed in a wide range of colors -- Sun conures have a striking orange-yellow plumage; Maroon-bellied conures have a tuft of maroon feathers on either side of the belly, and Crimson-bellied conures have blood-red colored bellies.

Listen to the sounds produced by the conures and gauge their talking ability. While all conures use their vocal chords, they vary in their sound-producing capabilities. Blue-crown conures, Nanday conures and Cherry-headed conures screech, mimic sounds and talk a lot more than Blue-throated conures, Black-capped conures and Green-cheeked conures.

Observe the size of the conures. Different conure species have different sizes ranging from 8 to 18 inches. The Pyrrhura species are the smallest conures measuring 8 inches from beak to tail, while the Aratinga conures vary in size from 9 to 18 inches long.
