How to Name a Parakeet

Parakeets originated in Australia and the name is actually an umbrella term for the small or medium type of bright colored bird, related to the parrot. Parakeets are intelligent, active, friendly and easy to care for. Parakeets can also learn how to speak and perform tricks. There are several different types of parakeets, but budgies are the most popular for pets because they are small and less expensive than other types. Naming a pet is not as simple as it seems and there are a few factors to consider before naming your pet parakeet.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the name short -- one to three syllables. Parakeets are clever and will recognize their name. By keeping it short and simple, the recognition will be easy for the bird.

    • 2

Use the colors of the bird to help find a name. Parakeets are all brightly colored, but the actual colors differ greatly amongst different types of birds. It is likely that your parakeet has something distinct with her coloring. If she has stripes or a bright color in one area, you could use that -- Stripes, Spot, Freckles, Bluebell etc.

    • 3

Study the bird's personality. If he flies around a lot or quickly, you can name him something such as Zoom, Speedy or Superman. If he is always making noise, name him something such as Chirp, Chatter, Tweet, etc. If he is very affectionate, name him something such as Lovey, Sweet, Dollface, etc. Your pet does not have to be named right away -- get to know your new bird first.

    • 4

Name your pet parakeet after someone you knew, a relative or just a human name that fits. More than half of all pet names are either human names or nicknames, according to Bow Wow Meow. You may look at your bird and think, "She looks like a Zoe" or "His name should be Trevor." Before deciding, though, consider people you may know with the same name. It could create confusion in conversation if the name comes up frequently.

    • 5

Name your parakeet after nature. This could be decided by his coloring, or just a natural occurrence you deem fitting. The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a beautiful phenomenon that occurs in the skies of Alaska. The colors resemble that of a parakeet, therefore a fitting name could be Aurora. Consider Sunset, Midnight, Sunny, Fern and Ocean.

Consider a foreign word or name for your parakeet. Parakeets originally came from Australia, but many species originated in Asia, New Zealand, Central America and South America. Animal World has a list of each species and where they originated. The place of origin makes an interesting name.
