How to Take Care of a Pet Finch

The choices are almost endless when selecting a pet finch. There are solid-colored varieties, some with dark markings and others with vibrant jewel-tones reminiscent of parrots. Finches are energetic birds and have a lilting, attractive song, but are not quite as noisy and boisterous as many other pet birds. They are difficult to tame and aren't capable of mimicking, but their playful and entertaining antics make them enjoyable pets. Finches range in size from 3 to 7 inches long, depending upon the type, and they can live up to 17 years.

      Choose a cage that is a at least 25 inches wide and 25 inches tall. The bars should be spaced no more than 4/10 inch apart.

      Place at least three perches inside the cage at different heights. Install one in front of the area where the food and water dishes will be located.

      Attach a mineral block to the inside of the cage.

      Place a water dish and two food dishes in the cage. Place them at a level that is easy to access without being soiled by droppings.

      Line the bottom of the cage with plain paper, as some inks are toxic to finches.

      Add two or three bird toys, such as ladders, swings or wood toys made for chewing.

      Provide fresh water and food every day. Commercial finch food should be offered as well as fresh greens like lettuce, spinach and kale. The birds also enjoy apples, oranges, pears and melon. Fresh vegetables and fruit should be served in their own dish and removed after two hours.

      Position the cage approximately 6 feet from the floor, either on a stand or suspended from the wall or ceiling. Choose an area away from drafts, smoke, strong odors and loud noises.

      Wash the food and water bowls daily with a mild dish-washing detergent. Refill the bowls twice each day.

      Change the paper in the bottom of the cage once each day.

      Cover the cage at night to prevent exposure to drafts.

      Offer a covered bird bath filled with lukewarm water two to three times each week.

      Clean the cage and all accessories each week with a disinfectant. Rinse and dry all items thoroughly before placing the finch back into the cage.
