Instructions
Check with the airline when shopping for airplane tickets to make sure they allow the on-board transport of pets. Research the exact restrictions and requirements. Most airlines have similar rules. Pets less than eight weeks of age are not allowed. Pets must remain in the kennel at all times. At least 24 hours worth of food and water must be included in the kennel. Airlines are not liable for pets in the event of an emergency. Most importantly, it is important to learn the exact dimensions required for the kennel. During the flight, kennels are stowed under the seat in front of the passenger. For example, Continental Airlines allows 17.5" L x 12" W x 7.5" H (44 cm L x 30 cm W x 19 cm H) for hard sided kennels and 18" L x 11" W x 11"H (46x28x28 cm) for soft sided kennels.
Call ahead and make arrangements with the reservations department for an available flight. Airlines only allow a certain amount of kennels per flight. For example, Continental allows up to five kennels per flight while American Airlines allows up to seven.
Purchase an appropriate kennel and prepare its contents for the flight. Comparison shop different pet stores for a hard-sided or soft-sided kennel. Some airlines have kennels available. Continental Airlines offers soft sided kennels for $60. Place a separate food dispenser and water dispenser in the kennel prior to transport. Make sure to pack enough food for at least 24 hours for the parrot.
Arrive early to the airport to allow for security checks and any unforeseen delays with the check-in counter and gate.
