Things You'll Need
- Pliers
- Leg band
Instructions
Hold the bird gently around its body, with its wings held against its sides. If you are banding a large bird, such as a full-grown cockatoo, ask a friend to help you.
Turn your hand so the bird's legs stick out and are easy to access. If you are banding a young bird less than three weeks in age, use a closed band. If the bird is older than three weeks, use an open band. Lift the band up to the bird's right leg.
If you are using a closed band, slide it over the bird's right foot. As the bird grows, it will become impossible for the band to slide off its foot. If you're using an open band, slip the bird's leg through the gap in the band. Then use pliers to gently pinch the band closed. A small seam will remain in the open band.
