How to Build Cages for Finches

Lovers of finches must make sure their pet birds have the best care possible. This means a finch needs water cups, food troves and resting perches to be healthy. However, the overall design of the cage is left up to each individual owner. This freedom makes creating a finch cage a fun process that can add a flavor of creativity to your home. Creating the cage is a fairly difficult process unless you are an expert. However, the labor is worth it in when your finch is a happy bird.

Instructions

    • 1

Put two 1 inch by 2 inch by 48 inch pieces of oak lumber on the edge of a table. This will give you the adequate working space needed to make the marks in the lumber. Use measuring tape and a pencil to make marks every 3 inches from end to end of the lumber. Drill a point on each mark using a 1/16-inch drill bit.

    • 2

Drill additional 3/4-inch deep countersink holes on top of the point holes. Place two of the 1 inch by 3 inch by 36 inch oak boards on the table. Use the tape measure to make marks at 12, 12 1/2, 13 1/2, and 14 inches along the board. Make point holes in the first two marks, followed by countersink holes in the last two holes.

    • 3

Insert the drywall screws into the two pieces of 1 inch by 2 inch by 48 inch board and the 1 inch by 3 inch by 36 inch board to secure them together. Use the screws to attach the 1 inch by 2 inch by 40 inch board to the marks made in Step 2. Secure the last 1 inch by 3 inch by 36 inch board to the 48 inch pieces using the screws. Place cage wire or chicken wire on these frames using the staple gun.

    • 4

Place the wire along the front of the cage so it is over the two 12-inch sections that are open. Secure the side frames to the 48 inch by 40 inch by 3/4 inch plywood with screws. Attach the same board to the top and bottom side frames and the butting on the back of the cage. Secure these pieces in place using screws.

    • 5

Put the 1 inch by 2 inch by 39 inch piece of lumber on the table. Make marks on each of the edges inside the board at 1 1/2 inches. Drill point holes and then quarter-inch countersink holes to make the door frame side pieces.

    • 6

Secure the 1 inch by 2 inch by 7 3/4 inch pieces to the side pieces so they fit between the two 39-inch pieces on the cage's top and bottom. Attach the hinges onto the door following the manufacturer's installation instructions. Some hinges screw in while others need to be fitted.

    • 7

Install the cage wire to the back of the door with the staple gun. Place the door on the front of the frame in the small opening. Install the wire onto the back of the cage so the finches have a perching area. Make sure it is secured to the plywood by the staple gun.
