Things You'll Need
- Parrot toys
- Television
- Radio
Instructions
Provide your parrot with plenty of toys. These are widely available from pet shops, and often include climbing posts, bells and mirrors. Buy a selection of toys and alternate them regularly. This will prevent your parrot from becoming bored with the toys, and will also allow you to clean the toys thoroughly.
Talk to your parrot regularly. One of the most striking features of an African Grey parrot is its ability to talk, so by talking to your parrot you will teach it words and phrases to repeat. They can learn an unlimited amount of words, so repeat phrases, words and songs. You might be surprised by how much your parrot remembers and can repeat back.
Allow your parrot out of his cage regularly. This will allow him to practice flying, explore his environment and bond with his owners by landing on their shoulders and interacting. Most cages open at the top to allow the bird to fly out, and to return home when he is ready.
Keep your bird somewhere where he can see what is going on. Consider where is the busiest room in your house, and place the cage in there. When your bird is well settled in, you may want to move his cage to give him a chance to explore different rooms and views.
Provide entertainment even when you are out. As well as toys, leave the television or radio on. Your parrot will appreciate the background noise, and may even pick up on new words and phrases.
