How to Wean an African Gray Parrot

African gray parrots often act quite similarly to humans. They are active birds that crave socialization. Due to the demand for this type of bird, irresponsible breeders often sell these birds to pet stores too early and many of these birds die. An African gray parrot must be weaned properly from hand-fed bird formula, gradually, for it to survive in the home. Weaning should be left to the professionals as it is far too easy to make a mistake and injure the bird.

Instructions

    • 1

Syringe feed bird formula. This is the first food that an African gray is fed when being raised by hand for sale as a pet.

    • 2

Puree fruits and vegetables. A diet rich in vitamin A and calcium is very important for these birds. Most fruits and vegetables should be served in their raw form, while some others, like carrots, should be steamed first.

    • 3

Finger- or spoon-feed the purees to the bird. This acclimates the bird to the different tastes and make it more likely for the bird to continue a diverse diet later in life.

    • 4

Feed the African gray parrot seeds. Many people mistakenly think that birds only require seeds in their diet. However, a more diverse diet for African gray parrots means a longer life.

    • 5

Offer raw fruits and vegetables. Once the African gray is eating the purees and the seeds, it is time to introduce larger pieces of fruits and vegetables. When the bird is properly eating these foods, it is considered weaned.
