How to Breed African Greys in Captivity

There are several types of African Grey Parrot. Of these, the Congo Grey is the favourite of breeders and enthusiasts because of its high intelligence and ability to mimic its keeper's words. The Congo is extremely observant and is capable of speaking complete sentences that are appropriate to the situation. The Congo is also considered the most beautiful. The Ghana and West African Greys are similar to the Congo, although these parrots are smaller. African Grey chicks are some of the easiest parrots to raise, and the parrots have a reputation for being good parents.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pair of opposite-sex African Greys in a shared cage from the very beginning to create a pair bond. The parrots will feel frightened when they initially move into a new environment, and will find comfort in one another. By the time they have adjusted, they will have formed a strong bond.

    • 2

Place an L-shaped nest box in the parrots' cage. In a large aviary, the box should be placed as high as possible amongst shrubs and away from brightly lit areas, as this provides the birds with more privacy.

    • 3

Securely fasten stable perches in the enclosure. The parrots will use both the perches and the nest box for mating. A pair will mate several times a day for three to four weeks before producing the first egg.
