What Kinds of House Plants Can Budgies Eat?

Budgerigars, or budgies, belong to the parakeet family. These colorful little birds possess a lot of intelligence and can make loyal and entertaining companions in the right hands. No larger than a man's hand, budgies range in color from completely yellow, to blue and white to combinations of blue, yellow and green. They have squat hooked beaks and no plume. Like other household pets, budgies like to nibble on your houseplants. Though this rarely harms the houseplants, it may harm your budgie if they nip at the wrong kinds of plants. Keep budgie-friendly plants in your house to prevent illness or death.

  1. Pineapple Guava Tree

    • Pineapple guava trees are small, growing no more than a few feet tall. Their broad, oval, glossy green leaves give them a tropical look complemented by their spectacular flowers. These blooms have five pale pink petals surrounding a bright red center rife with yellow-tipped stamens. The flowers eventually grow into round, fuzzy green fruits. Both humans and budgies can eat the flowers and the fruits.
      Pineapple guava trees require full sun and warm temperatures. Place them in a sunny window and keep the house warm. Their small but sturdy branches make a perfect place for your budgie to perch.

    Eucalyptus Flowers

    • Flowering eucalyptus trees require a lot of growing space and large containers, but give your home a semi-tropical feel. The leaves also give off a light, mint fragrance that makes your home smell fresh. Budgies love feasting on the red and pink feathery flowers that appear on these Australian natives each spring. Water your eucalyptus tree deeply every week or so and set it in a sunny area. Close to some French doors or a large, sunny window should work well. Budgies may also enjoy perching and napping in the eucalyptus's branches.

    African Violets and Lipstick Plants

    • Both African violets and the lipstick plant feature brightly colored flowers, soft green leaves and are very low-maintenance. They like moist, well-drained soil and bright, indirect sunlight. Setting them close to, but not in the path of, a sunny window is popular. African violets have bright purple flowers with rounded petals and bright yellow centers. Lipstick plants have fiery red tube-shaped flowers wrapped in cocoons of short green leaves. Your budgie can nibble freely on both; they grow slowly but steadily and aren't poisonous.
