Things You'll Need
- High-quality commercial parrot formula
- Oral syringe
Instructions
Remove the baby parrot from the parent parrots at about three weeks after hatching. By allowing the baby parrot to be fed from the parents for the first few weeks of life, the baby will get antibodies we humans cannot give. Be sure to reassure both baby and parents and talk to them in a calm, sweet voice, as separation can be a difficult, emotional time for them.
Take a small clean bowl and mix the parrot formula according to the directions on the can. Measure it in the oral syringe by using the chart on the back of the can or asking your avian veterinarian.
Put the end of the oral syringe inside the bird's beak and squirt a tiny bit at a time into the mouth. Allow the baby time to swallow the formula and then continue to give the baby a little at a time until the syringe is empty. While you are feeding the baby, you should talk to it calmly and with a soft tone. You may also touch the baby or even hold it in your hands or lap while feeding.
Take the baby out of its incubator several times a day to play with you. As the baby grows you may start introducing parrot toys, small building bricks such as Legos, and interactive toys that make noise or have lights.
Start to introduce commercial parrot food at about 10 weeks of age. You should offer this in your hand a little at a time before putting it in a bowl or food dish. You want the bird to associate you with its needs, food, toys, fun and friendship.
