Instructions
Provide a large cage for your finches and canaries to fly around in. Two square feet per bird is ideal. Canaries can be solitary pets, while finches like to socialize with other finches. Keep the bird cage very clean by cleaning weekly and disinfecting each month to prevent illness.
Add twigs and branches as footholds. Do not add toys, which are more suitable for larger birds. Separate water and food dishes so the birds have to fly from side to side of the cage, and place the dishes away from bird perches to prevent food contamination.
Buy special seed mixes made for canaries and finches. Although these provide plenty of nutrition on their own, you may choose to add some boiled egg.
Hang a millet spray as a treat. Also add calcium-rich cuttlebones as a healthy supplement.
Provide adequate lighting for the canaries and finches each day. You can use full spectrum light bulbs or place the cage near a window.
Take your birds for regular checkups with a veterinarian who has experience in treating canaries and finches. Make sure you express any concerns you have with their health and development.
How to Care for Canaries and Finches
Canaries and finches are popular choices for new bird owners. However, they require special care to ensure that both bird and owner are happy. These birds tend to be wilder than many other species of birds and require a more hands-off approach. Take proper care of your canaries and finches and they will be a welcome addition to your household.
