Instructions
Join a local finch club or society. Here you will meet experts with years of experience raising finches that can help you get started with finches.
Decide which species you would like to raise. The next steps should be done with your particular finch species' needs in mind.
Build an aviary. The aviary should be large enough for the number of birds you plan to house and have areas that the birds can retreat to out of the sun, rain, or wind. It should also be built so that rats and other predators cannot get into the aviary.
Plant non-toxic plants in the aviary. This is best done several weeks before the birds move in so that the plants can become established.
Make sure your birds are healthy. Once you have your birds have them examined by your avian veterinarian to determine that they are healthy enough to breed.
Provide a healthy finch diet. Finches on a good diet will have fewer health problems during breeding and are more likely to raise healthy babies. They can be feed finch pellets, seed, fruits, and vegetables.
Provide nest boxes and nesting material. They type of nest box and material may vary depending on the species of finch you are keeping.
