Instructions
Remain calm. If the bird is flying haphazardly around your home, it might be easy for you to be excited and run around screaming. However, that is not the best way to calm the bird.
Talk to your bird in a calm, soothing voice. Your bird is very familiar with your voice. If you speak in a calming voice that it is familiar with, it will be able to relax. Birds can die from stress, so it's important you talk to your bird slowly and encourage it to calm down.
Put your gloves on and try to catch the bird, if it is flying or flopping around. If it is injured, be careful when handling the bird so you don't hurt it further. Cup the bird in your hands and get it in its cage as quickly as possible.
Trap the bird in its cage, if the cage is fairly small and portable. Open the door to its cage and try to get the bird to fly in. Close the door immediately.
Determine what is wrong with the bird. If the bird needs medical attention, take it to your local veterinarian for treatment. If your bird is simply excited from being out of its cage, it should start to calm down from being back in its home.
Pet your bird soothingly, if it typically enjoys being petted. Birds do enjoy having their feathers stroked in slow rhythmic movements.
