Instructions
Making The Cage Ready
Make the cage ready for a new parakeet. Make sure that it is clean and that it has been well organized. Remove toys that do not work or are broken, and clean things that are dirty. Make sure there is fresh food and water.
Choose a parakeet to be a companion. Ask the pet store which parakeets they think would do well with only one other bird. Be sure to choose a male or female depending on what you would like. Remember that a male and female pair will not mate unless you give them bedding material to make a nest. Otherwise, all male and female combinations work well with parakeets.
Bring your new parakeet home and go into the room with the parakeet cage. Make sure all windows and doors are closed, and other animals are out of the room.
If you are adding new toys or perches, do so before you add a new parakeet. Also, fill the food and water first.
If the parakeet is tame, open the box and take it out. If the parakeet is not very tame, put the edge of the box up against the cage and open both the box and the cage at the same time, tilting the box to encourage the parakeet to enter the cage.
Shut the cage once the new parakeet has entered.
Talk soothingly to both parakeets while they get to know each other. Spend some time in the room, whistling or talking soothingly.
Leave the room and make sure that the door is closed. Allow the parakeets some time to get to know each other.
