How to Care for a Budgie

Budgerigars or "budgies" are small parakeet-like birds that make excellent pets. They are lively yet relatively easy to care for. While not all budgies talk, many do, and some have a vocabulary of over 100 words. A budgie requires some daily maintenance, but if you have a small apartment, it may be the perfect pet for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a cage large enough for the budgie. Make sure the wires on the cage are close enough that the bird can't get his head through them. Also make sure the cage is large enough for a budgie.

    • 2

Buy wooden perches for the budgie cage. If you can, get different size perches so the budgie can get some varied leg exercises. Also buy a feeder, waterer, cuttle bone, mineral block and quality budgie food. Don't forget to get your budgie some toys too.

    • 3

Pick out a budgie. Try to find a young one that is finger trained. If you can't find a finger-trained bird, you should at least try to find one that seems friendly.

    • 4

Feed and water the budgie daily. The budgie is dependent on you for its care. Also, put a small chunk of fresh vegetable like a carrot in the budgies cage as an occasional treat.

    • 5

Take time to play with your budgie and talk to it. The more attention you give to your budgie, the more he is likely to respond to you talking to him. You can also train the budgie to be quiet by placing a light sheet over his cage at night. Just remember to remove the sheet in the daytime.

    • 6

Clean the bird's cage at least once a week. Line the cage with newspaper to make clean up easier. Don't forget to clean the waterer and the feeder.

    • 7

Keep the budgie in a room that doesn't have any drafts. Also put the cage away from air conditioning and heat vents. Take care not to spray anything near the cage, and watch out for any kind of fumes that may be harmful to the bird's health.
