Why do penguins have long beaks?

Penguins do not have long beaks. In fact, their beaks are relatively short compared to other birds of similar size.

For example, the Emperor Penguin has a beak length of about 4.2 inches, while the closely related Rockhopper Penguin has a beak length of about 2 inches.

In general, penguins have short, pointed beaks that are adapted for catching and eating fish.
