How to Catch a Budgie

Letting your budgie out of its cage to exercise, for at least one hour per day, is essential to its health. However, catching your budgie and placing it back in its cage can be challenging. If you don't know how to properly recapture your pet budgie, the bird can end up hurting itself. Before releasing your budgie, learn how to catch it both indoors and outdoors.

Instructions

  1. Catching a Budgie Indoors

    • 1

Secure the room to prevent your budgie from hurting itself and to keep it from going outside. Close any open doors and windows, cover mirrors, close the curtains, turn off ceiling fans and remove other pets, such as cats and dogs, from the room.

    • 2

Dim the light in the room and play soft music to help your budgie calm down.

    • 3

Avoid running after your budgie, because this may frighten it -- instead, slowly follow it. Wait until it stops flying and allow it to settle down before approaching it.

    • 4

Cup the bird in your hands while talking to it in a comforting way. Put one hand over your budgie's back to hold its wings and tail down. Place your middle and index finger around the bird's neck. Place your other hand under your budgie's feet and chest area. As an alternative, use a bird-catching net with a padded rim to catch your budgie.

    • 5

Place your budgie back in its cage and lock the cage door.

    Catching a Budgie Outdoors

    • 6

Place the budgie's cage outside in the area where you've spotted the bird.

    • 7

Open the door to the cage and place your bait. Spread birdseed over the bottom of the cage and outside the cage to lure your budgie. Provide clean water in the cage.

    • 8

Wait in an area where the bird can't see you. Close the door to the cage when the bird goes in it to eat and drink.
