How to Keep Backyard Parakeets

Keeping parakeets in your backyard has many advantages, not least a reduction of noise and mess in your home. The parakeets will also enjoy the extra space to stretch their wings provided by an outdoor aviary. If you live in a chilly climate, include a heated shelter in your aviary or your birds could suffer from the cold. Include feeding stations, access to fresh water and, if the aviary is large enough, a place to sit and watch your parakeets.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a backyard aviary by covering a region of your yard with plastic or wire mesh. Add structure to the aviary by using sections of PVC pipe. Include trees and bushes on which your birds can perch along with areas of shade and sun and leaving enough room for the birds to fly. Using the same material, build an air-lock double door that prevents birds from escaping when someone enters. Use heavy wires as twist-ties to secure the doors.

    • 2

Place a wooden shelter or birdhouse inside the aviary. Use heat lamps to ensure the shelter remains warm in chilly months. Add platforms, climbing ropes and other objects of interest for your birds.

    • 3

Place feeding stations throughout the aviary along with bowls of water so the parakeets always have access to fresh food and clean water. Use a seed mix formulated for parakeets and supplement with fruit and mealworms. Check on the birds daily and clean the aviary weekly.

Position a couple of plastic lawn chairs inside your aviary to create a space for relaxation and bird watching.
